You’re passionate about life. Studying all forms of it, from microbes to plants to animals. Everything from examining population dynamics to plant/animal interactions to physiology and molecular processes. You can picture yourself applying your biology degree to find solutions to real world problems including environmental sustainability, human disease, and the ethical application of technology. If this sounds like you, biology is probably the right path.
The biology program is part of the School of Natural Science and Mathematics. Our goal as a department is to graduate women and men that are uniquely equipped to provide scientific perspective and solutions to the complex problems facing humanity.
Learn about the School of Natural Science and MathematicsThe biology major is a program designed to give you a full breadth of course work in biological studies, while still allowing you to customize your curriculum to meet specific areas of interest.
During the course of your studies, you will participate in student-centered research programs through which you’ll gain real-world experience performing bench research. The biology program emphasizes experiential learning, to ensure that you gain the types of experiences that will translate excellence in the work place and beyond.
The best lesson I learned from the Mount was being of service to others.
Mount students participating in research have great outcomes from co-authoring published works to presenting their work at national conferences. Our students consistently go on to pursue graduate, medical, and other professional training at top schools as
With a degree in biology, you'll be qualified for graduate study and employment in areas such as public health, medical technology, agriculture, physical therapy, biotechnology, toxicology, and in many government laboratories.
Mount graduates have gone on to organizations and institutions such as:
A biology minor is for students who have an interest in life sciences that they would like to combine with studies in another major. Students who minor in biology must complete 20 hours of study in the biology curriculum.
These innovative programs allow you to earn undergraduate degrees from both Mount St. Mary’s and partnering institutions.
Biology students have the option to pursue the four-year bachelor’s degree in biology, or to take on a 3/2 dual-degree program in biology and nursing.
