About the major.

With a bachelor’s degree in German from the Mount, you’ll develop proficiency in all four language skills – listening, speaking, reading and writing – and enhance your knowledge of the cultures of German-speaking people. You’ll be able to express yourself clearly in written or spoken German and understand the language in a variety of contexts. You’ll even improve your creative, analytic and problem-solving skills.

You’ll study the literature and culture from periods in early German history to the post World War II period to modern day, as well as explore the history and culture of Austria and Switzerland. Additional topics cover various aspects of German culture, including art, music, cuisine, film, drama, religion and society, as well as the world of German business and economics. Courses in modern German-speaking writers, German cinema, and German detective and crime stories will further strengthen your understanding of German culture and language.

As an important complement to your time spent on campus, you’re encouraged to study abroad. You’ll have the opportunity to visit and study in Salzburg, Austria, where you’ll have an immersive atmosphere to practice your foreign-language skills, gain valuable cultural insights and make lasting personal relationships.

These practical skills will enable you to work for and with German-speaking organizations and businesses that are part of one of the world’s largest economies. With a German degree from the Mount combined with a minor in a complementary field, you’ll be able to pursue a career with an international business, as a teacher in a German-speaking country, or in U.S. foreign service.

At the Mount, I was able to study abroad, excel as an honors double-major, grow in my faith, and be a captain of a Division I team. Achieving all of that isn’t possible at other universities.
