Lives of Significance

Brianna Cherney, C'19

On Her Way to CPA

Brianna Cherney, C’19, has aced college. Back at Notre Dame High School in Lawrenceville, New Jersey, she set a goal to earn the 150 credit hours required to sit for the certified public accountant exam by the time she completed her bachelor’s degree. When she walks across the stage at commencement in May, she will have reached her goal. This summer Cherney will study for the CPA exam before beginning her job as an audit associate at CohnReznick’s Baltimore office in September.

When she isn’t crunching numbers or formulating spreadsheets to prepare for her exam, you’ll likely find Cherney on the tennis courts this summer. A four-year member of the Mount’s club tennis team, she served as president of the club this year. She has been an active member of the Mount community, assisting incoming freshman students as an orientation leader every year and prospective students as a Mount Ambassador tour guide. In addition, Cherney has served with the Center for Student Engagement and Success, working the help desk and acting as a mentor to a class. She’s also a member of the Accounting Club and is a Eucharistic minister.

During the 2018 tax season, Cherney had an internship at RLH CPAs & Business Advisors, LLC. She credits the Career Center as being pivotal in her successful job search – completed a full six months before graduation. Over the past few years, Cherney attended several recruiting events hosted by the Career Center, where many of the employers were interested in her forensic accounting major, seeing it as an asset to their company. The Career Center made her job search much smoother, Cherney said.

“I’m proud to be walking in the footsteps of my parents, grandfathers and other relatives who also majored and work in accounting,” Cherney shared. Now that she is on the verge of reaching her college goal, many wonder what’s next. Maybe partner?
