Advanced Study in Reading Certificate

Post-Baccalaureate program for working teachers.

With a graduate certificate in advanced study in reading from the Mount, you will be prepared to lead your school’s literacy initiatives as a literacy specialist or coach. A combination of nationally recognized coursework, on-site teaching experience and research will provide you with the skills and knowledge to meet the needs of linguistically diverse and neurodiverse learners.

Advance your career as a reading specialist or literacy coach.

Graduates of the program are eligible for certification as a reading specialist, K-12, from the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE). The Mount's program includes:

  • Emphasis on planning for culturally and linguistically diverse and neurodiverse students.
  • Six courses and a practicum (24 credits total) that can be completed on a part-time basis.
  • Classes designed for working adults. Attend evening classes at campuses in Frederick and Emmitsburg. Some classes may also be available online or in hybrid format to reduce travel time.
  • National recognition by the International Literacy Association.
  • Accredited by National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).

Additional Programs

The School of Education also offers certificate programs in instructional design and technology, along with instructional leadership.

Affordability & Financial Aid

The graduate certificate in advanced study in reading is for certified teachers who hold a bachelor's degree. Candidates are seeking the professional role of reading specialist/literacy coach in grades K-12.

  • $14,391 - Estimated total cost of program tuition, including fees.*
  • Cost is based on 24 credits (6 classes and one 6 credit practicum) at $594 per credit, plus practicum fee ($135).*
  • No application fee.
  • Financial assistance may be available through federal and state-funded programs, private loan providers, employer tuition remission or reimbursement, or deferment of undergraduate loans.

*Tuition and fees represent 2022-23 rates, effective July 1, 2022. Tuition is subject to change without notice.

Financial Aid

Students enrolled on at least half-time basis (6-credits per semester) may qualify for financial aid. You may seek financial assistance through federal and state-funded programs, private loan providers, or deferment of undergraduate loans.
