About the program.

The Mount's Master of Education with a concentration in reading program is designed to prepare you to serve as a reading specialist for your school. After graduation, you'll be able to seek advanced certification as a reading specialist, K-12, from the Maryland State Department of Education.

The program will cover reading assessment and intervention, reading in secondary content areas, and teaching reading to English language learners. Courses will also cover current trends in education, how the reading specialist plans and delivers research-based professional development workshops for colleagues, and communicates data-driven decisions with K-12 learners, their parents, colleagues and policy makers.

Lastly, a practicum will give you the opportunity to participate on a school-based literacy team and teach K-12 students under the mentorship of a certified reading specialist. The practicum emphasizes using assessments to develop and deliver reading interventions to individuals and small groups of students, as well as designing and providing professional development for other educators, paraprofessionals and parents.

With a Master of Education with a concentration in reading, you can pursue positions such as a reading specialist at public or private schools.

Graduates of the program are eligible for certification as a reading specialist, K-12, from the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE).

M.Ed. study tracks also include a concentration in technology facilitation and a program in instructional leadership.

  • Cost is based on 36 credits (twelve (12) classes) at $585 per credit, plus practicum I fees ($130).
  • Students may transfer in up to nine (9) graduate credits.

Admissions requirements

The Master of Education program is for certified teachers who hold a bachelor's degree in education. Candidates are seeking the professional role of reading specialist/literacy coach in grades K-12.

Admissions requirements include:

  • Bachelor's degree in education with a minimum 2.75 GPA
  • Current valid teaching certification
  • Prerequisite courses may be required
