Veteran Student Financial Aid

The Mount proudly welcomes veteran students. We recognize and value the sacrifices you and your family have made to serve selflessly and will make every effort to help make your transition to college as easy as possible. Please reach out to us at anytime with questions about applying the Mount, how to apply your benefits, or the dedicated resources we have to support you while you're here.

We also encourage you to explore the GI Bill Website as you consider applying to Mount St. Mary's University.

The Yellow Ribbon Program

Mount St. Mary's participates in the Yellow Ribbon Program which allows eligible veterans and dependents to attend the Mount tuition-free. The Yellow Ribbon Scholarship supplements any Mount scholarship up to $17,500 or the cost of tuition, whichever is less. If the combined value of the two scholarships is less than tuition, the Mount will award additional institutional funds to cover the remainder of the tuition.

To be eligible, a veteran must be eligible for the Post-9/11 GI Bill™ at the 100% rate. Recipients are not eligible to receive any other institutionally-funded need-based grants.

New Students

When you're ready to apply, here are a few distinctions to ensure you have the proper forms:

  • If applying for the first time, please complete the VA Declaration of Intent form.
  • If applying under Chapter 33 (Post 9-11 GI Bill™), send us your Certificate of Eligibility Letter.
  • If applying under Chapter 30 (Montgomery GI Bill™), attach your DD214 (the Release from Active Duty form)
  • If applying under Chapter 1606 (Montgomery GI Bill™-Reserves), use DD2384-1 (Notice of Basic Eligibility form) and a copy of your military I.D. card
  • If you are a transfer student applying under Chapter 30, 32, 34, 35 or 1606, you will need to fill out VA form 22-1995 (Request for Change of Program, Place or Training)

Previously Certified VA Students

Each semester, VA educational benefited students must be certified to continue to receive benefits. Please fill out the Declaration of Intent form found in MyMount under Forms once you have registered for courses.

** The DOI must completed each semester a student wishes to have their courses certified to the VA. The DOI does not roll over from semester to semester. **

To avoid delays in processing claims, it is extremely important to submit all information along with any changes in status. If there have been any benefit changes, please be sure to provide the new documentation to the SCO. Typical documents needed:

COE – Certificate of Eligibility, a letter from the VA to the benefit user outlining the benefit Chapter and percentage. (Used for those utilizing CH 33, 35, 1606)

PO – Utilized by those receiving benefits under VRE/CH 31

Please email updated versions of these documents to the Mount’s SCO, hart@msmary.edu.

You will also need to complete a regular freshman or transfer application for admission.

Tuition Discount for Active-Duty Military

The Mount’s Division of Continuing Studies honors the tuition assistance (TA) benefit for active-duty military students, reducing the tuition costs to $250 per credit hour for eligible students pursuing an accelerated undergraduate or graduate program. Appropriate documentation is required each semester. To be eligible for the reduced military tuition rate, you need to submit the following document:

  • Proof of service statement or letter: Provide a copy of a statement or letter that verifies your current service status in the military. This document should clearly indicate your active duty or reserve status.

All active-duty servicemembers (including Guard and Reserve) must contact their Education Service Officer (ESO) or Education Counselor within their branch of service prior to enrolling in any courses at Mount St. Mary’s University. For more information about military tuition assistance processes, visit Military OneSource’s website, and learn more about tuition and fees.

Each military branch has its own process and TA application form. For more information, view the links below.

TA DECIDE is an information and comparison tool designed specifically to aid participants of the DoD's Tuition Assistance program in making informed choices on schools and education programs.
